Separation Anxiety
What are the signs of separation anxiety? Dogs with this disorder are often well behaved when people are around, but left alone they panic, showing one or more of these signs: destruction (chewing & digging at floors, windows, walls etc..) inappropriate elimination ( urinating, defecating), excessive salivation or vocalization (barking or whining). Some dogs exhibit signs when separated from the person or people whom they are most attached-even if other people are around. How can I be sure my dog suffers from separation anxiety? If your dog exhibits the signs listed above when left alone, it could be because of separation anxiety. An ideal way to help find out is to videotape your dog when you are out. However there are other disorders and illnesses with similar signs. Why should separation anxiety be controlled? This disorder causes your dog real suffering, because he panics uncontrollably every time he is separated from the people he loves most. If you ignore the signs of separation anxiety the disorder will get worse. Won’t firm discipline help? Absolutely not. Dogs with separation anxiety cannot control their behavior, and should never be punished for it. Verbal reprimands and punishment may actually make your dog more anxious and may make the problem worse. Will it help if I get another dog ? Adding another dog is not usually helpful. What’s the best way to control separation anxiety? Behavioral training has proven to be effective in relieving the suffering of your dog and helping it to return to a normal life. There are also medications to help more severe disorders. Is behavioral training difficult? The techniques recommended are simple and easy to follow. You may be told to ignore your dog before leaving. You should never scold your dog for panicked actions. When will I see results? You can see results in a few weeks if your consistent with training.
